We denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who we are to beguiled demoralized by the charms of pleasures that moment, so we blinded desires, that they indignations.
Zavratnica is certainly one of the most beautiful bays on the Croatian coast. It looks like a miniature of the Norwegian fjords. It is only a 15-minute walk along the sea from Jablanc. It can be reached from the village of Zavratnica, descending from the viewpoint along a sandy path towards the bay.
Within the Velebit mountain there are strict and botanical reserves, natural monuments, and 2 national parks (Paklenica and Sjeverni Velebit). Zavratnica cove also belongs to the category of special protection.

The bay is 900 m long, and the width varies from 50 to 150 m. The canyon rises to a height of 100 m. Due to its natural values, it was declared a “protected landscape” in 1964, and since 1981 it has been an integral part “Velebit” nature park.
ORIGIN
According to legend, Zavratnica was created in a strong earthquake way back in 615, which also sank three ancient Roman cities in this area. The real origin of the bay is different though. It was created as a result of tectonic movements that fractured the carbonate rocks, after which the waters from Velebit deepened the canyon. As the coast of the Adriatic Sea slowly sinks, the canyon of Zavratnica gradually descends into the sea, and from it, a bay drawn into Velebit was formed.
HISTORY
At the beginning of the 20th century, an upper path with a lookout point and a promenade along the sea were built. Around that time, Zavratnica became a secluded summer resort of the Viennese and Prague elite. It is visited by many famous people of that time (Dr. Miroslav Hirtz, Arpad von Degen and others). Even the famous writer Vjenceslav Novak, who found inspiration for his works here, could not resist the magical attraction of Zavratnica.
THE UNDERWATER
In the bay you can see the remains of a warship that was sunk by Allied planes in 1944. The ship presents a real challenge to curious undersea explorers.
PLANT WORLD
Zavratnica has scarce soil, therefore the development of flora and vegetation here is scarce. The flora includes 129 species of different plants, of which 100 are autochthonous and 29 are allochthonous. In order to stop the torrents, man built cascades and terraces in drywall where he planted cypresses, Aleppo and black pines, figs, holm oaks and other trees.
