Get to know the Premužić trail

Top parts of northern and central Velebit from Zavizan to Baske Oštarije, connects 57 km long hiking trail. It is named after its designer Ante Premužić, the famous builder of paths and trails in Velebit. Building trails lasted only 3 years (1930-1933). The works were carried out by numerous workers from villages situated under Velebit mountain. Construction of access routes is provided in the most inhospitable and beautiful parts of the Velebit mountain formerly known only to a small population. Since there are no big climbs, people not accustomed to hiking can go too. Shelters can be found in mountain objects near the track. Quality of construction and the natural environment on this trail  is considered as the masterpiece of the construction. Altitude difference between the highest and lowest points throughout its length is only 200 meters. Lovely brick paths, embankments, bridges and halftunnels pass through wildest and the most unapproaccable Velebit karst. By all this and match with the natural environment, it can be called a masterpiece of architecture. Given the importance of exploring the sights of northern and central Velebit mountain, this unique trail justifies the name of the educational path through world biosphere reserve.

The highest concentration of attractive sites of Velebit is  in the northern part, between Veliki Vratnik and Alan. There is Zavižan with special botanical reserves and Velebit botanical garden, a collection of living plant exhibits of Velebit vegetation. The strict nature reserve Rozanski and Hajducki kukovi, rising to 20 km2 in dozens of large and bare boulders (hip) above the surrounding terrain. It features high karst and dividness in isolated peaks, separated by a deep and almost unapproaccable holes and chasms.

Heights are above 1600m, and the relative amounts of individual cones reaches up to 300m. The harsh landscape of stone has visually complement in equally bizarre forms of vegetation, which were disfigured by spruce and juniper pine. Group Rozanski kukovi is slightly higher due to Premuzic trail and is much more approachable than hard karst Hajdučki kukovi. There are still places where human foot has not entered.

Premužić path becomes educational trail! Employees of Velebit Nature Park with combined forces have in conjunction with a specialized company to perform these and similar works from Senj, brought and put all the educational table, which will Premužić trail  transform into educational trail, at least that part which passes through the Northern Velebit National Park.
