An island with a mild Mediterranean climate

The island of Rab has the so-called >Adriatic type< Mediterranean climate with pleasant warm summers and mild winters.

Snow, which covers the peaks of Velebit throughout the winter, is a real rarity on the island of Rab. The favorable sea temperature for swimming (above 20° C) is from May to October, and the average annual sea temperature is 16.73° C.

Geographical position

The island of Rab is situated in the Kvarner group of islands between 44 ° 41 ‘and 44 ° 51’ north latitude and 14 ° 40 ‘and 14 ° 53’ east longitude from Geenwich. The town of Rab covers an area of 102.85 km2 of insular area (2.86% of the total area of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County) and 424.52 km2 in the waters of the Kvarner Bay. Rab Island stretches from northwest to southeast, longer than 22 kilometers from cape Sorinj on the northwest to the southeast of Cape Glavina. Its greatest width is 11 km.

The Velebit canal divides the island of Rab from the mainland, and the closest to the mainland of 1800 meters is in the extreme southeastern tip. From the island of Pag in the southeast is separated by the channel Paško, on the west towards the islands of Cres and Losinj is Kvarnerić, and from the island of Krk to the northwest by Senj doors.

Climate

The island of Rab has, so called Adriatic Type of Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. For such a mild climate Rab mostly thanks to Kamenjak mountain chain that protects it from cold winds in winter and early spring. Besides the wind from the southeast, mostly in autumn blows hot and humid wind – jugo and regularly brings rain. In summer usually blows landward breeze, a pleasant breeze that soothes summer heat. Other winds and storms are rare occurrences. Snow, that throughout the winter covers peaks of Velebit, on the island of Rab is a real rarity. Climate of the island of Rab is particularly suitable for tourism development. The average number of sunshine hours per year is 2 417 and a number of completely cloudy days is very small.
