What Karlobag offers

Karlobag city

KARLOBAG (1.019 inhabitants, municipal centre) and its 42 kilometers long Riviera is positioned under the VELEBIT, a mountain range dividing continental and Mediterranean Croatia. This unique location gives Karlobag an ideal combination of mountain type climate at the nearby Baske Ostarije, at 1000 meters above sea level and only a 15-minute drive away, and Mediterranean climate along the coast. This natural advantage of coutryside and climate provide optimal conditions for yearround tourism. Sun bathing and swimming in the summer, skiing and sleighing in the winter, mountaineering and long walks in the autumn, photography and herbs in the spring.

Karlobag sits at coastal highway leading from Rijeka in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, and at the continental one leading to Gospic, the Plitvice Lakes and the capital, Zagreb; thus becomes a perfect tourist oasis suitable for short break or refreshment spot during a long trip, as well as for a longer holiday.

The clear sea, well preserved nature, historical and sacral monuments, piece and quiet guarantee ideal circumstances for your vacation. If you prefer an active holiday and want to have some fun, there is a wide range of activities we can offer: futsal, basketball, volleyball, tennis, bowling, miniature golf and different sport at and under the sea, to name just a few. You can also enjoy various activities at the Velebit, including mountaineering, paintball, cycling, walking, panoramic photography from gazebos at Kubus and Basaca. There is a sports hall in Velebno hotel, in case of rain or snow. Karlobag also offers lots of amusement in the evening, international painters’ colony, trips to nearby islands (Pag, Rab, Zadar archipelago) and national parks of North Velebit, Plitwice Lakes and Paklenica.

 

Karlobag as "Bag"

In the past it was known as the “Bag”. In early 14th century was under the authority of ban Paul Subic, after which the authorities assume Kurjakovic princes. 

In Roman times, near the present Karlobag, there was a settlement, “Vegium.”

After “Bag” was destroyed and burned by the Turks in the year 1525, it was rebuilt by Archduke Charles. Today name comes from the authority of Austrian Emperor Charles VI. who proclaimed it as Emperor’s royal city in the 16th century.

In the 18th century the construction of the port was ended. By the end of the 20th century is famous for its ferry port which maintained links with the island of Pag.

Interesting antiquities in Karlobag are Kapucin monastery where is precious paintings (The Last Supper, unknown master), the parish church St. Joseph built in1712 by the time of Leopold I. with architectural ornaments from the 18th century and the church of Our Lady of Sorrow. Above the town on the hill are the ruins of a medieval fortress “Fortica, and the remains of the church St. Charles Borromeo built in 1710. There are also Town fortress from XIII. Century, Kubus – Velebit – memorial construction road Gospic – Karlobag of Emperor Franz Joseph, St. Chapel Trinity Church of the Holy from 1725, Church of St.Vid from 1258, City beach from 1922, Theresiana – path includes 3 km long part of the old Austrian road Teresiana which connected through the Velebit center Gospic with port Karlobag. Theresiana was built in 1786 according to the instruction given by the Emperor Joseph II, and was named after his mother, Empress Maria Teresia.
